Jason Olson - Biography
Background and Studies
A native of Colorado, guitarist and private instructor Jason Olson has been studying and performing since 1989. Expanding upon a background in Rock and Jazz, Jason graduated from the University of Northern Colorado with a Bachelor of Music (BM) in Classical guitar in 2000, and a Master of Music (MM) in 2005.
At UNC, Jason studied with Stephen Waechter and Jonathan Leathwood. He also performed in master classes with artists such as Evangelos and Lisa, Antigoni Goni, Fabio Zanon, Judicael Perroy, Jason Vieaux, Nikita Koshkin, and Denis Azabagic. Jason continues to be a “student of the guitar” as a member of the Guitar Foundation of America, and through various other professional activities including participation in guitar festivals and competition judging.
Performing
As a classical guitarist, Jason performs both solo in ensembles at the University of Northern Colorado. He also performs with a classical guitar trio that includes Steve Waechter and Jim Bosse. The trio has recorded the CD “The Angel of Shavano” — which features the compositions of Jim Bosse — and currently performs the music throughout Colorado. Jason has also performed with bands such as Vandal, Blind Redemption, Friction, Fat Pappy, The Bringers of Swing, Swing Shift, and Dixie Leadfoot. While performing with Fat Pappy, they recorded the CD “Fat Pappy’s Worm Farm.” He currently performs with his rock band Last Men on Earth and works as a “guitarist for hire” for a variety of classical and contemporary projects
Teaching
In addition to performing, Jason has been teaching guitar lessons privately for over 30 years. He currently teaches a studio of approximately 50 students a week in Longmont, Colorado. Jason also has experience teaching at Imagine Charter School in Firestone and is currently the instructor of guitar at the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley.
